How I Started This Journey

Many years ago, I was in an abusive relationship and I looked for ways to disappear, even if only for an hour. I wanted a place that was monitored, somewhere he would never want to go, but within walking distance of my apartment, and somewhere I could be guaranteed peace and quiet. It was hard going, but I never have up hope.

I decided to take a trip to Memorial Park Cemetery, a place I'd been visiting since I was a child. I had family buried there, and it was always a beautiful place. My grandparents graves were neighbor to the pond/lake where the geese would cross on the water and sit on the warm grass to bath in the sun. A friend of mine who committed suicide had also been laid to rest in the hallowed grounds, and it was an opportunity to pay respects. The day was sunny, cloudless, warm, and as soon as I entered the gates, I found the peace I'd been looking for.

I didn't drive, but walking was never a bother. Having packed a water bottle, some food, and a hat, I was well prepared for the trip, and I had my cell phone to take pictures to document the journey. I was excited, and felt safer than I had in years.

I started at the gates and just walked the paths, looking at the graves, the monuments, the trees and flowers. I traversed that silent path and relished in the tranquility, and after I'd made a full circle back to the gates, I knew I'd found my sanctuary, and I wanted to know more about this fascinating place.

Thus began my new found obsession; finding the beauty in the strangest of places and showing the world what lay behind the gates and walls of these sacred spaces, all through these eyes of a living spirit.

Welcome to my journey.

I hope you find peace, and enjoy the hidden beauty within.
